The Secret of Other Shipwrecks - Living Underwater Archaeology

Tuesday 10 November · 10:30

Museu do Mar - Rei D. Carlos, Cascais

A participatory experience inspired by underwater archaeology and the long history of shipwrecks on the Cascais coast. Starting from objects, goods and material clues, the public is invited to reconstruct the story of a nau (ship) of the Carreira da Índia (India Run) and to discover how archaeologists distinguish evidence, interpretation and maritime imagination. The activity unfolds as an investigation. A collection of materials related to maritime voyages of the 16th and 17th centuries raises questions: where did they come from? Did they belong to the same ship? What can really be demonstrated? The case of the nau Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, shipwrecked in 1606 near São Julião da Barra, serves as a reference to explore the Carreira da Índia, the goods transported, the risks of navigation and the work of underwater archaeology. Approximately 50-60 minutes, with adaptation to the pace, age and participation of the group. Free, upon prior registration. Information and registrations: 214 815 954 / 214 815 950 (call to the national fixed network); [email protected]. Organization: Câmara Municipal de Cascais | Floresta do Invisível. SDGs: 14 (Protect Marine Life).
