In The Space Between the Silences, Rwandan-Belgian artist Sandra Muteteri Heremans explores intertwined histories, shaped by the experience of diaspora, by the African socialist movements of the post-independence period and by the political legacy of the Cold War. The exhibition focuses on intimate narratives to reflect on the ways memory is transmitted, silences are inherited, and which voices impose themselves through the grand narratives of history. By interweaving narrative threads from past and present, the artist approaches intergenerational transmission as a space for creating diasporic worlds. The exhibition brings together a new film, commissioned by Maumaus/Lumiar Cité and WIELS-Centre d'Art Contemporain (Brussels) and produced by Auguste Orts, with collages and research maps that offer a perspective on the artist's path through archives, oral histories and embodied knowledge. Starting from an archive of letters, Heremans traces the correspondence of a student from East Africa in the Soviet Union of the 1970s. The film crosses found footage with narration, revealing what lies hidden beneath, or between, the silences of historical records. Wednesday to Sunday, from 15h to 19h. Free admission.
