Brief Introduction | This event will take place at the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, Rua da Academia das Ciências, nº 19 - 1200-168 Lisboa. Tribute to Gabriel Fauré | May 4, 7 PM. In the landscape of 19th-century French vocal music, the mélodie established itself as a chamber art where poetry and music intertwine with particular rigor, without the genre being confused with the sacred or salon song that surrounded it. It is in this territory that the Chamber Music Cycle of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos proposes a tribute to Gabriel Fauré, placing his pages in dialogue with works by Gounod and Massenet that illuminate the genre's path and the affinities between three central figures of French music. Gounod and Massenet were, each in their own way, precursors of the mélodie: the former brought his lyrical vein to the sacred space, evident in Tantum ergo, without abandoning the gallant tone of salon song; the latter cultivated the sensual exoticism of pages like À la Zuecca, alongside a concentrated melancholy that his Élégie made famous. Fauré, heir and undisputed master of the genre, succeeded Massenet precisely in the composition class of the Paris Conservatoire in 1896, an institutional link that this program makes audible. From the Cantique de Jean Racine, which in 1865 earned him the first prize at the École Niedermeyer and determined his affirmation as a composer, to En prière and the serenity of the Pavane, Fauré's path reveals faith, love, nature, and intimacy as facets of a single voice. The sacred, in fact, runs through the entire program, from Gounod's Tantum ergo to Fauré's sacred pages, functioning as a transversal thread between the three composers. Between the barcarolle, the elegy, the salon song, and sacred music, the tribute reveals less a chronology than a web of affinities: formation, faith, friendship, and legacy. In 2027, a century after Fauré's death, hearing these pages side by side is to understand how French song was built on a lineage made of discretion and rigor.
