The Portuguese Catholic University hosts the first Triennial of Art of the Catholic Universities, an international initiative promoted by the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See. Commissioned by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça and with chief curation by the Portuguese Nuno Crespo, the triennial takes place in eight cities across seven countries and three continents, bringing together 104 artists, 14 curators and various cultural institutions. Under the theme Exercises in Empathy, ArtCut proposes art as a space for encounter, dialogue and reflection on some of the most urgent challenges of the present. In Lisbon, artists such as Helena Almeida, Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, Ana Vieira, Carlos Bunga, Daniel Blaufuks, Délio Jasse, Julião Sarmento, Mona Hatoum, Pedro Costa and William Eggleston, among many others, will be represented. The programme includes exhibitions, artistic commissions, publications and public programmes, seeking to create a true "School of Empathy": a space where different languages, experiences and perspectives meet to reflect on the role of art and creativity in building more humane societies.
