Guided Tours of the Church and Museum of São Roque

Friday 6 November – Friday 27 November

Museu de São Roque, Lisbon

The guided tours of the Church and the Museum of São Roque offer an in-depth reading of one of Lisbon's most extraordinary heritage ensembles. The Church, notable for its Mannerist and Baroque architecture, survived the 1755 earthquake almost intact, preserving a rare and valuable collection. The Chapel of São João Baptista stands out, one of the richest ensembles of 18th-century sacred art, commissioned in Rome and installed in Lisbon with great ceremony, and on the verge of being classified as a National Treasure. In the Museum of São Roque, founded in 1905, in addition to the treasure of the Chapel of São João Baptista, the collection presents 16th-century paintings of São Roque, reveals the global dimension of the Jesuit mission, with pieces of sacred art, vestments and devotional objects that bear witness to centuries of spirituality and cultural exchange between the West and the East. Its last section recounts the presence of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, founded in 1498, which since 1768 has ensured, in this place, the continuity of the preservation and appreciation of this unique heritage of Portugal. Tours on 23 October, 6 and 27 November, at 11 a.m. No booking required. Paid participation. 213 535 449 | [email protected].
