Bread and Circuses starts from an expression from Ancient Rome, popularized by the poet Juvenal, to reflect on the relations between power, entertainment and society. At the time, the distribution of food and the organization of public spectacles served to win popular favor and divert attention away from political and social issues. Centuries later, this strategy continues to raise questions about the role of culture and mechanisms of distraction in contemporary society. In this exhibition, Pedro Barateiro recovers the imagery of the arena and the amphitheater as spaces of spectacle, confrontation and affirmation of power. Places where violence becomes entertainment and conflicts, even when real, seem distant because they happen to others. Between representation and reality, the arena also becomes a space of political and ethical reflection. At a moment marked by the ecological crisis, by social inequalities and by the transformation of power structures, Bread and Circuses challenges us to question the role of art and culture in today's world. A critical reflection on what we choose to see, what we prefer to ignore and our responsibility towards the collective future. ARV. Tuesday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. drawing.
