Katia Canton

Wednesday 18 November – Saturday 19 December

Kolibri Gallery, Lisbon

The exhibition starts from the universe of fairy tales to revisit familiar images and characters under the sign of the Unheimlich: that which, although known, becomes strange. In the reading proposed by Dunker, fairy tales make shelter and threat coexist: the house can transform into a gloomy castle, and the forest that welcomes can also be inhabited by wolves. The exhibition follows these unstable passages between the familiar and the unknown, the hidden and the revealed, and the animated and the inanimate. Canton's practice maintains an ongoing relationship with fairy tales and with the narratives that run through childhood and adult life. In this exhibition, these stories appear as material to question inherited images and the meanings we attribute to them. The title mobilizes the concept of Unheimlich, associated with Sigmund Freud, to frame this encounter with that which seems familiar but can no longer be fully recognized. Wednesday to Friday, from 2pm to 6pm, Saturday, from 12pm to 6pm. Technical sheet: Curatorship by Christian Dunke.
