Hélène de Beauvoir

Friday 9 October – Saturday 31 October

Colégio Almada Negreiros (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Lisbon

Exhibition dedicated to the works produced by the French painter during the four years she lived in Portugal, a refugee from the Second World War. Around 30 of these works are gathered in the exhibition Ao Encontro do Olhar | Hélène de Beauvoir, presented by the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH) from September 21. The show brings together reproductions of paintings and watercolors made during the artist's time in Portugal and seeks to reveal a still little-known part of her artistic output. The younger sister of Simone de Beauvoir, Hélène built her own artistic path, although often overshadowed by the intellectual projection of the French philosopher and writer. A painter and feminist, she was involved throughout her life in different initiatives fighting against the oppression of women. And women also occupy a particular place in the gaze she cast on Portugal. In several of the works now presented, Hélène de Beauvoir portrays women's work in rural and seafaring settings, leaving a record of the life and work of Portuguese women in the 1940s. As part of the exhibition, on October 7 at 6 p.m., the talk Hélène de Beauvoir em Portugal: Obra, Refúgio e Memória will take place. Starting from the works created by Hélène de Beauvoir during her stay in Portugal, between 1941 and 1945, the talk features the participation of Pedro Calheiros, retired professor at the University of Aveiro, and Emília Ferreira, integrated researcher at the Instituto de História de Arte da NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST and former director of the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea. Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Technical sheet: Curated by Bruno Marques and Márcia Seabra Neves.
