O Lugar da Charneca

Wednesday 7 October – Sunday 1 November

Igreja de São Bartolomeu, Lisbon

O Lugar da Charneca (The Place of Charneca) is a street exhibition organised by the Lisbon Municipal Archive, in partnership with the Santa Clara Parish Council, which presents and highlights the history and identity of this territory through documentary research and the collection of testimonies, photographs and documents provided by current and former residents. The images and memories gathered evoke landmark moments in the life of the community and bear witness to its connection to local heritage, religious celebrations, school, families, the associative movement and sport. Integrated into the European Heritage Days 2026, under the theme “revive, resist, reinvent”, the exhibition stems from the Memórias da Charneca (Memories of Charneca) project, developed since 2021, and brings together more than 500 photographs, documents and testimonies collected from the community, helping to enrich the city's collective memory. It also has the support of the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião, through the loan of historical press clippings that enrich the exhibition narrative about sport in Charneca. The street exhibition, presented in MUPIS installed in the public space next to the Church of São Bartolomeu da Charneca, allows visitors to trace local history through a set of panels with photographs, documents and interpretive texts that reveal the evolution of the territory and its communities. The programme includes guided tours on 20 September and 1 November at 11:00, and on 27 September and 25 October at 14:30. It also includes the workshops Retrato Químico (Chemical Portrait) (27 September, at 16:00, at Quinta Alegre) and A História Também se Vê (History Can Also Be Seen) (25 October, at 15:30, at Quinta Alegre). The workshops are free to enter, subject to prior booking via [email protected]. All photographs collected as part of the project can be consulted online on the Lisbon Municipal Archive website. free.
