Along a Line

Friday 20 November – Saturday 16 January

3+1 Arte Contemporânea, Lisbon

Along a Line is a group exhibition that brings together works by Olga de Amaral (1932 CO), Inês Brites (1992 PT), Cabelo (1967 BR), Chiachio & Giannone (1969 & 1964 AR), Evy Jokhova (1984 EE/UK/RU), Carlos Noronha Feio (1981 PT), Giulia Paz (1999 BR) and Thomas Szott (1993 BR). Along a Line gathers contemporary practices that use and explore textile materials and fabrics as central elements of their compositions. The exhibition seeks to encourage the public to consider and reflect on the various approaches to production that incorporate textiles and that are carried out in an intuitive way. At the same time, it aims to expand and challenge perceptions of other practices that were previously seen as relegated to craft. Works in fabric, adorned with stitches, appliqués, weaving, felt, printed and dyed, which create dialogues and stories, provoke emotions, reveal ideologies and thoughts, are embroidered in complex arrangements. The tactile nature of the material is evoked as a tool for expression in place of other more formal methods and processes. Texture and fluidity are highlighted while reflecting on the dimensionality that results from this “tapestry”. It is through the divergent practices and unique techniques, with lines and threads, of these artists that the narratives are revealed, untangled, sharing meanings, stories and memories. Transformed by the hand present in these soft bodies, as a path to wander, to follow or diverge, here the gaze can roam without restrictions through the compositions, some apparently static, others that are activated by a breeze. In this selection of works, the purpose is not to categorize all forms of textile techniques, but rather to propose the discovery of some lines along the way. Tuesday to Friday, from 2 pm to 7 pm, Saturday, from 11 am to 4 pm. group exhibition tapestry.
