Rhinoceros

Friday 13 November – Sunday 13 December

Teatro Municipal Mirita Casimiro, Cascais

Brief Introduction Written in 1959 by Eugène Ionesco, Rhinoceros is one of the fundamental works of the theatre of the absurd and one of the most celebrated political parables of the 20th century Synopsis In a small town, the inhabitants begin inexplicably to turn into rhinoceroses. As the phenomenon spreads, what at first provokes astonishment, fear and repulsion gradually becomes common, desirable and, in the end, almost impossible to avoid. Ionesco thus builds a play about the contagion of ideas, conformism, the seduction of collective strength and the difficulty of the existence of an I when everyone chooses to belong to a We.
