Xavier

Thursday 29 October – Sunday 28 February

Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, Lisbon

The National Library of Portugal presents a selection of around forty prints and lithographs by Xavier, now integrated into its collection thanks to a generous donation by the artist. As an art of paper, multiple and reproducible, just like the book, printmaking finds a natural place here, reinforcing the BNP's iconography collection. The ensemble highlights Xavier's mastery of traditional printing processes, the fruit of his deep relationship with the great Parisian ateliers, among them the legendary Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut, through which Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Miró and Giacometti passed. Inscribed in that lineage, Xavier establishes himself as a true conjurer of wonders, uniting the creative gesture with the workshop knowledge of the master printers. The works on display reveal his intimate and magical universe, between the circus, the shadow theatre, the enigmatic Sun and the persistence of childhood, bearing witness to a singular path in which imagination settles, luminous, on paper. Tuesday to Sunday. Free.
