Júlio Pomar: Equus

Wednesday 14 October – Sunday 27 December

Panteão Nacional, Lisbon

Júlio Pomar returns to the public eye in an exhibition marking the centenary of his birth. On display at the National Pantheon, Equus brings together works from the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Collection dedicated to one of the most striking figures in the artist's output: the horse. Curated by Santiago Macias and Isabel Inácio, the exhibition traces different moments of Pomar's career, from D. Quixote (1959) to the expressive Tauromaquias of the 1960s and the monumental triptych Tropel (1989), revealing the evolution of his visual language and of the chromatic intensity that characterises his work. Installed inside the Church of Santa Engrácia, where the singular acoustics prolong the echo for several seconds, these paintings and drawings engage in a dialogue with the monumentality of the space. Far from mythology, Júlio Pomar's horses appear as living, earthly and powerful bodies, symbols of movement, energy and freedom, in an exhibition that pays tribute to one of the greatest names in 20th-century Portuguese art. ARV. Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Technical sheet: Curated by Santiago Macias and Isabel Inácio.
