Topografias em Barro (Topographies in Clay) is an exhibition that inaugurates a new phase of the British artist Jeremy Gardiner's artistic research. Bringing together 18 ceramic panels, the show transports into clay the research into landscape, geology and the passage of time that he has been developing in painting for decades. Inspired by the Jurassic Coast and the Lake District in England, the works evoke cliffs, rock formations, lakes and waterfalls. Reliefs, textures, colours and layers transform the ceramic surface into a territory in permanent mutation, where matter holds the marks of erosion and memory. The project was born from two striking encounters: with the work of the Brazilian ceramicist Francisco Brennand, in Recife, and with the murals and reliefs of Querubim Lapa, in Lisbon. Developed in collaboration with Suzana Barros and Vera Teotónio, the series explores the expressive possibilities of clay, in a dialogue between painting, sculpture and ceramics. More than representing places, Gardiner builds material interpretations of the landscape, bringing natural processes close to artistic creation. ARV.
