The Rose Has Teeth is the result of an artistic residency at Estufa Fria, where Henrique Neves excavated hidden narratives and investigated elements glimpsed through the exuberance and spectacularity of the greenhouse and its surroundings. The research explored invasive plants and botanical classifications, pruning as a mode of care and control, and historical pigments extracted from plants now in extinction. Neves also investigates the dedicated, almost Sisyphean, work of gardeners and all those who look after the greenhouse, the presence of nude female statues and the corresponding absence of male bodies. The title cites and subverts a phrase by Wittgenstein to question the relations between naming, language and lived experiences. The drawings, objects and other entities on exhibition respond to frictions and shocks between experiences, the dazzling nature of the place and various phantasmal presences. The works are inhabited by stories of art, hauntings, tales and personal narratives of the artist. Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. drawing painting.
